SUMMARY:The Urban Blues and Rhythm and Blues
DESCRIPTION:The Urban Blues arose when Mamie Smith recorded “Crazy Blues” in 1920. It was a big hit and attracted other black woman singers including Ma Rainey\, Bessie Smith (no relation) and others. Early Rhythm and Blues (R&B) musicians blended jazz\, blues\, and boogie-woogie with an up-tempo. Early musicians included Louis Jordan\, Fats Domino\, and T-Bone Walker. We’ll hear songs by the pioneers of both genres plus some of the musicians who followed them.
