DESCRIPTION:Pikes Peak Memorial Day ceremony will be on Monday\, May 25\, 2026 at 10:00AM.\n\nThis outdoor event honors fallen Veterans\, their families\, and all prisoners of war or those missing in action who never returned home.\n\nThe tradition of honoring our nation’s fallen began in 1868\, when General John Logan\, Commander‑in‑Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic and namesake of Fort Logan in Denver\, issued an order establishing May 30 as “Decoration Day.” The 30th of May was chosen because it was not a date of any significant battle or event. Americans were encouraged to place flowers on the graves of soldiers. Over time\, Decoration Day evolved into what we now know as Memorial Day\, which became a federal holiday in 1971 and is observed on the last Monday in May.\nToday\, traditions continue across the country\, including the annual placement of flags on graves at National Cemeteries.
